Mazda CX 5 2024 Tested: Mazda-style ECO label:

Mazda CX 5 2024

Today we will meet the Mazda CX 5 2024. It is an SUV suitable for a family that already has the ECO label in its gasoline versions. If you are looking for an SUV of this type and want to spend around 30,000 euros, you may have looked at models like the Kia Sportage or the Nissan Qashqai. The Mazda CX-5 has Asian origins like them, but a very different approach. In this video we are going to tell you why.

The Japanese brand’s best-selling SUV was modernized in 2024 to obtain the ECO label, but remains faithful to its essence. In the previous test of the 2022 CX-5, we said that it was one of the few without electrification. Now you have the opportunity to earn that environmental distinction. But without changing its idiosyncrasy. It seeks to be more efficient and cleaner, but remains different. Because it is still a naturally aspirated car with a manual transmission (in the tested version)

After a week of driving it there are many things I liked about the Mazda CX 5 2024. I would highlight its very careful interior, which stands out for its good ergonomics, the refinement of the engine – very progressive – and, above all, the feel of the manual transmission.

It is currently available for a price of 32,300 euros with the 165 HP entry-level gasoline engine that we are currently testing. This is the price recommended by the brand, you can find offers for the Mazda CX 5 2024 in our new car section, published by official dealers of the brand. Remember that the amount may be somewhat less if you need to finance the car. Time to learn more about this Mazda CX-5.

Mazda CX 5 2024 Exterior:

The Mazda CX-5 was originally launched in 2012. It was the model that debuted the Kodo design and showed that an SUV can have quite dynamic features. Since then, more than three million units have been sold. Since then there have been several updates, some focused on design, others on technology and others on the mechanical section.

The truth is that the  Mazda CX 5 2024 changes little compared to the 2023. It retains that aggressive grille design, with a pattern that has gained depth. If a year ago we told you that the red accent identifies the Homura sporty approach version , today we tell you that the green identifies the New ground finish , which seeks to conquer the most adventurous customers.

This grille is supported by the chrome wing” that joins the headlights, which have become sharper over the years, with a double accent for the daytime running light. In the most complete finishes they have Smart Full LED technology. There is a second lower air intake, which is supported by plastic protection with a protection that imitates steel.

The side maintains the silhouette with the elongated hood and here there is no glossy black on the underside and wheel arches, but rather the usual black plastic of SUVs, more durable. 17-inch wheels in the basic trim, 19-inch wheels in this trim, with 225/55 R19 tires. There is 200mm of ground clearance, which one expects from an SUV. There is no shortage of shadow and light plays on the side panels, so common in the firm, and this is the metallic Zircon Sand color. Unusual, really, but there are ten to choose from.

The Mazda CX 5 2024 measures 4,575 mm in length, falling in the range between the Mazda CX-30 (4,395 mm) and the Mazda CX-60 (4,745 mm). It is a kind of compact SUV with enough size for a family. If we compare it with some of its most direct rivals, we see that they are all close to four and a half meters, but the CX-5 is up to 13 cm larger than a Nissan Qashqai.

MODELLength
Mazda CX-54.575 mm
Kia Sportage4.525 mm
Peugeot 30084.447 mm
Nissan Qashqai4.425 mm

Of its total length, 2,700 mm correspond to its wheelbase. Other dimensions are its 1,845 mm wide and 1,685 mm high.

At the rear we find pilot lights that copy the design of the front daytime running lights, divided by the tailgate. Above the rear window there is a spoiler that integrates the third brake light and black side fins. Already at the bottom, the silver-toned bumper has two real exhaust outlets, which indicate that this is a gasoline unit, because diesels only have one.

Mazda CX 5 2024 Interior:

On the outside the Mazda CX 5 2024 has been changing and refining aspects and on the inside, the same. Each time slight aspects have been improved so that the initial base, which was already good, gains in whole.

Mazda CX 5 2024 interior
Mazda CX 5 2024 interior image

We have a very SUV driving position, very different, by the way, from that of the Mazda CX-30, which is clearly a somewhat taller compact. IN the CX-5 you sit more upright and have fabulously padded seats.

In the New ground finish, the upholstery is imitation leather, with a hexagonal pattern and lime green stitching. The quality of construction of the entire cabin, from the materials used on the dashboard to the adjustments, is much higher than that of other generalist rivals, especially in the top-of-the-range finishes. In the basic ones you will see more hard plastics.

Something that I would highlight about the driving position is that the driver is the true starting point of design at Mazda. And we see it in the news. The physical buttons on the steering wheel have been improved so that they are within easy reach. And although it looks like the same steering wheel, because the diameter is the same, now the rim is somewhat narrower and the area for the thumbs has been changed.

Behind the wheel we have a classic instrument panel. It is not as attractive as the digital ones that most alternatives offer, but work has been done so that the information is seen more clearly and you have all the key data at a glance.

In the center of the dashboard, the new touch screen, which debuts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, has a simple and intuitive menu system… and has a fabulous rear and overhead view camera. It is 10.25 inches, a size that places it among the best of its direct rivals, although being more landscape-shaped it somewhat affects the view of the maps.

MODELScreen
Mazda CX-510.25 inches
Kia Sportage10.25 inches
Peugeot 300810 inches
Nissan Qashqai10 inches

Mazda retained the physical controls for the climate control, although they are in a somewhat lower position. And although the screen is touch, you won’t be able to use it on the go. To operate it while driving you have to use a rotary control on the console. There are also buttons to directly access the main menus and a wheel for the volume. Great for the driver… somewhat less so for the passenger, unless he or she is left-handed.

In front of the gear lever we have a surface with wireless charging for the mobile phone. Behind it, a pair of drink rests and a fairly deep chest with USB-C connections. It is covered by the armrest, which could slide forward because for some drivers – myself included – it may be a bit set back.

The rear lateral seats are very good, with two very comfortable seats, almost at the level of the front ones. In the test unit they are even heated. It’s a shame that the center is not as comfortable, since the bench is much shorter and also the transmission tunnel – the Mazda CX 5 2024 offers versions with all-wheel drive – steals space. We do, however, have aerator outlets at the end of the console.

The legroom and headroom are correct for adults up to 1.85 meters and the width is average for the segment. Another discomfort for those who must occupy the rear center seat is that the cushioning of its backrest is not so comfortable. There is an armrest with a drink rest and a small place where you can leave your phone while it charges with the pair of USB sockets.

Mazda CX 5 2024 Trunk

If we talk about cargo space, it announces 522 liters of capacity , a little more than if you choose it with a diesel engine, by the way (it stays at 510). I like that the curtain opens with the tailgate, which is an interesting detail, and that the light is integrated into that tailgate, because that way you don’t cover it with anything when the trunk is heavily loaded. One but, the 760 mm at which the loading mouth is, which will force you to make more effort if you load large packages. Or choose the Mazda 6 Wagon.

Mazda CX 5 2024 interior

It is a somewhat fair figure for its size, similar to that of the Peugeot 3008, which is a somewhat shorter car. The Kia Sportage mild hybrid is much further ahead.

MODELTrunk
Mazda CX-5522 liters
Kia Sportage562 liters
Peugeot 3008520 liters
Nissan Qashqai504 liters

By the way, the update affected the trunk. Now the two sections that make up the floor can be placed at two separate heights. In the case of the Newground finish, the load floor panel is reversible, with a waterproof coating on the bottom. Under the floor we find a quite generous gap and in this finish it is resistant to water and scratches.

There are also holes on the sides, a 12-volt socket and even a strap to fix small objects. If you need to load large objects, it is possible to fold down the backrests of the rear seats, with levers on the sides. They are divided into three parts, in a 40:20:40 ratio, and by doing so you get a completely flat space with a capacity of 1,638 liters.

Mazda CX 5 2024 Motor

You can choose the Mazda CX 5 2024 with a diesel engine. It is a 2.2 SkyActiv-D block, with two power levels, 150 HP of power and 380 Nm of torque, manual transmission and the basic front-wheel drive. 184 HP and 445 Nm of torque, the most powerful, with the possibility of having automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. All of these engines have a turbo, a mechanical element known for more than a century and present in the vast majority of cars on the market.

Mazda CX 5 2024 image

It seems that the turbo is an element that is practical in cars. In fact, the vast majority of the market equips it. This is not the case in the gasoline Mazda CX 5 2024. There are two versions, the 2.0 e-SKYACTIV G with 165 HP of power and 213 Nm of maximum torque, which you can choose with manual or automatic transmission. The same one that we tested months ago but that now has a 24V system to regenerate energy during decelerations, using an electric motor that assists the main engine.

It is a four-cylinder block, like all of its micro hybrid rivals except the Peugeot 3008, which uses one of three. It is the most powerful and, with 1,998 cc displacement, it is also the one with the largest cubic capacity:

MODELPower
Mazda CX-5 2.0 e-SkyActiv G MHEV165 CV
Kia Sportage 1-6 T-GDI MHEV150 CV
Peugeot 3008 Hybrid136 CV
Nissan Qashqai DIG-T158 CV

What do you prefer all-wheel drive? Then you have to choose the 2 .5 e-SKYACTIV G with 194 HP of power and 263 Nm of maximum torque. It also has an ECO label but if you are not going to have to go through complicated roads, choose this one. Now I’ll tell you why.

Mazda CX 5 2024 Behavior

In the 90s the turbo became popular in Spain, thanks to turbo diesel cars. Its advantages were clear, since more performance was achieved using smaller blocks. But supercharged cars came much earlier. In fact, the first street car with a turbo came, curiously, from the United States, the paradise of naturally aspirated engines. It was the Oldsmobile Jet fire Rocket that achieved, in 1962, manufactured a 3.5 liter V8 engine in light alloy with a Turbo Garret.

Turbo engines are easy to drive at low revs, because that extra air entering the engine helps it respond. In cars like this Mazda CX 5 2024 you have to help it by downshifting with the gearbox because it is not until 4,000 rpm that the car starts to push hard. Of course, the feel of the change is simply fabulous.

Because of this, the Mazda CX5 2024 does not accelerate as quickly as one would expect. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.7 seconds, a high figure if we compare it with that of its main rivals. The Nissan Qashqai or the Kia Sportage complete it in one second less:

MODELAcceleration 0- 100 km/h
Mazda CX-5 2.0 e-SkyActiv G MHEV10.7 seconds
Kia Sportage 1-6 T-GDI MHEV9.6 seconds
Peugeot 3008 Hybrid10 seconds
Nissan Qashqai DIG-T9.5 seconds

It is also somewhat lazy in recovery, as it takes 7.2 seconds to go from 80 to 120 km/h. This means that it is not a car very designed to take risks when overtaking… but we must keep in mind that it is a car for quiet family use. When climbing slopes, you will also have to use the gear change to maintain cruising speed in a port.

Be careful, although there is a more powerful gasoline version, if you analyze the difference in price and performance, we believe that this basic one is more interesting. It is a very progressive engine, with superlative ride comfort. Mazda has increased the rigidity of the body with more adhesive and changed springs to make it comfortable in bumpy areas without losing its characteristic agility (although it is somewhat heavier than its predecessor).

And in terms of consumption, Mazda’s hybrid system is noticeable. Compared to the Mazda CX5 2023, it drops three tenths and now approves 6.5 l/100 km. Figures very similar to its competitors with smaller displacement blocks. Only the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid spends noticeably less, but with a less powerful engine:

MODELWLTP consumption
Mazda CX-5 2.0 e-SkyActiv G MHEV6.5 l/100 km
Kia Sportage 1-6 T-GDI MHEV6.4 l/100 km
Peugeot 3008 Hybrid6.4 l/100 km
Nissan Qashqai DIG-T5.6 l/100 km

I have achieved approved fuel consumption on a mixed secondary and highway route at legal speeds. And the good thing is that, when traveling at higher sustained speeds, it does not trigger. I have moved at 6.9 -7 l/100 km, a correct figure for a car of this volume and weight.
