The Hyundai Sonata 2024 completely changes its image and makes us miss that segment more and more
While in Mexico we have practically run out of mid-size sedans, except for three contenders; In other markets these continue to exist and are constantly updated. An example of this is the 2024 Hyundai Sonata. In this iteration it is updated to face titans like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord and company.
Although its design is completely new, it must be made clear that it is not a new generation. It remains the eighth in its history. It now adopts the latest in the brand’s design language, Sensuous Sportiness. With this it completely changes its image, to look more like the Grandeur. An LED light runs across its front from side to side, the fascia becomes more square and aggressive looking. The sides maintain a silhouette similar to the previous model, although the wheels also change noticeably.
The rear part also completely modifies the shape of the lights and depending on the version, it can have a small spoiler and a much more marked diffuser. The wheels can go from 18″ to 19″ according to the selected version.
Inside there are also important changes, in this case carrying new 12.3″ screens for the instrument panel and infotainment system, now included in a curved frame. In the center console there are also changes, since we will no longer find a traditional lever, being replaced by a selector through buttons.
Likewise, the interior receives new combinations of colors and materials to give it sensations of greater refinement. The equipment remains abundant, including a premium audio system, compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone A/C, sunroof, heated seats, wireless charging among many other things.
Mechanically everything indicates that there are no major changes. As standard it will have the 2.5-liter turbo engine with 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. Likewise, it has not yet been confirmed, but everything indicates that there will be an AWD variant.
To talk about the Hyundai Sonata is to talk about a well-known model in our market… that has no longer been sold for years. However, in other markets, such as North America, it is still alive.
In this sense, Hyundai already revealed the deeply renewed Hyundai Sonata 2024 for its local market, but now we have information for the version available in North America. There is not much difference between the markets, except for one significant feature: American customers can opt for all-wheel drive versions.
This is the first 4×4 variant of the Sonata and, finally, the spy photos of the Sonata AWD that we saw a while ago confirm. This is the automaker’s HTRAC (Hyundai TRACtion) system, similar to that found in Hyundai SUVs, which actively distributes power front or rear as needed.
Customers living in colder climates will likely appreciate the benefits of all-wheel drive, but those expecting a sporty variant with the Sonata N Line AWD will be disappointed. Buyers of the hybrid option will also miss out on this two-drive axle option. At least for now, since all-wheel drive is only available with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine.
To refresh your memory, the extensive update to the Hyundai Sonata includes a completely new front end with profiled optics and a lot of symmetry between the grille and the vents under the main optics.
There is more symmetry at the rear with new ‘H’ shaped taillights, mounted on a redesigned lower bumper. Inside, there is an updated driving position with a pair of 12.3-inch screens (one for the driver and one for the infotainment system) merged behind a single curved monitor.
The driver also has a Head-up Display at his disposal and, for sound lovers; Hyundai has updated the 12-speaker Bose sound system.
The 2024 Sonata is offered with three engine options for the North American market. We’ve already mentioned the ‘base’ sedan’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The Hyundai Sonata N Line has a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, and the hybrid opts for a 2.0-liter block in addition to a single electric motor.
Hyundai’s official press release does not talk about changes to these engines, nor does it include specific power values. So it is correct to think that the N Line produces 290 HP, while the hybrid develops 192 HP of combined power. The entry-level Sonata announces 191 HP.
Likewise, prices for the new 2024 model are not yet available. In any case, the base price of a 2023 Sonata SE is $26,565 (24,360 euros); the Sonata Hybrid Blue starts at $29,565 (27,115 euros) and the 2023 N Line starts at $35,940 (32,960 euros).
