General information
The 2024 Toyota GR Supra is a 4.38-metre-long, 2-door, two-seater sports car with a coupé body, which was introduced in 2019 and slightly updated in 2021. It is the fifth generation of the legendary Japanese sports car that was in production from 1993 to 2002 and, like its predecessor, has a 3-litre, 6-cylinder in-line turbocharged front engine and rear-wheel drive.
It is available in a more economical entry-level version, with a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine, also turbocharged. They develop a power of 340 and 258 hp respectively and both are associated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Two new finishes are included, Pure and Performance, one for each available engine. We could say that it is the older brother of the Toyota GR86.
Additionally, a limited edition of 90 units called the Jarama Racetrack Edition will be introduced in mid-2021, which is associated only with the most powerful engine. It is distinguished from the rest by its Horizon Blue body color and forged wheels finished in matte black. The interior features new black Alcantara upholstery with light blue stitching, matching the exterior paint, as well as a carbon fiber insert with the special edition identification.
It is the first model of Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) and has been developed jointly with BMW, so it shares a platform and propulsion system, among other elements, with the 2019 Z4 Roadster. Its chassis is built in steel and aluminum, it is a step above the Toyota GT86 (it is 2.5 times stiffer than this and, as a curious fact.
Toyota says that it also has 20% more rigidity than the Lexus LFA with its carbon chassis) and it enters to compete in a segment in which, apart from the BMW Z4, there are not many direct rivals, since, or they have stopped being sold like the Nissan 370Z (its successor, the 400Z, does not arrive in Europe), they are considerably more expensive models like the Porsche 718 Cayman, or they are slightly different concepts.
In this last group, we can include competitors that have coupé-type bodies derived from a saloon, such as the BMW 2 Series and the Mercedes C-Class Coupe, or models with a noticeably different size, such as the Ford Mustang (larger, heavier, and more powerful) or the Alpine A110 (smaller and lighter). The Audi TT can be considered an alternative, but it is not available with rear-wheel drive, which is a characteristic and differentiating element in this class of sports cars.
What engines does the Toyota GR Supra have?
The GR Supra is available with two different turbocharged engines, arranged longitudinally and sourced from BMW. The entry-level model is powered by a 2.0 L four-cylinder engine developing 258 hp and 400 Nm of torque, while the most powerful version is powered by a 3.0 L six-cylinder engine with 340 hp and 500 Nm. The turbocharger is twin-scroll and has direct injection and variable valve timing.
Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with torque converter and Launch Control function (for best performance when starting from a standstill), which sends power to the rear wheels via an active self-locking differential (optional for the 2.0 L version with the Performance pack). This LSD (Limited Slip Differential) operates both during acceleration and deceleration and electronically adjusts its locking percentage from 0 to 100% as required.
2024 Toyota GR Supra Test drive and consumption
Driving
We have been able to carry out an extensive test of the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Jarama Racetrack Edition, a sports car that we found to be balanced in all aspects. The first thing we noticed as soon as we got in and drove it around the city, was how comfortable it was when going over speed bumps of all kinds and quite abrupt potholes, as well as broken asphalt. It is surprising that, in the normal position (the softest possible), its electronic suspension absorbs irregularities better than most SUVs with low-profile tires, and even without sporting pretensions.
This is one of the main factors that make this car more GT- oriented than pure sports car-oriented. We confirmed this character when we made a long-distance trip on the highway and motorway, where we found it to be one of the best cars for traveling long distances without getting tired.
This is thanks to a superb compromise between stability, comfort, and agility, a very high margin of man oeuvre even at a good pace, and steering with good Centre-setting, precise and quite light, which registers the car in any curve very easily and which is practically unaffected by the undulations and irregularities of the asphalt, so it does not require you to hold the steering wheel with both hands and in tension under almost any circumstances.
It is one of those cars in which you do not feel as if the road is narrowing in the typical high-speed curve, while you overtake a truck traveling in the right lane. Additionally, it is well acoustically insulated, as far as rolling and aerodynamic noise is concerned, allowing you to hear only the engine quite clearly (even if it is amplified by the speakers).
All these virtues are also found on slower, more twisty roads, and here comes the compromise or price to pay for all the above, if we want to go in attack mode or do a fast lap on a circuit, which is where a real sports car would especially shine, in this case, some weaknesses in the Supra come to light.
We notice how it flanks (uncontrolled movements of the body) due to the suspension not being able to properly contain (not even in Sport mode) sudden weight transfers, with all the grip provided by its generously sized Michelin Supersport tires (255/35 R19 at the front and 275/35 R19 at the rear).
We also miss the steering being more connected to what is happening on the front axle and, in addition, having a bit more weight or less assistance (it is direct enough, practically like an M3 Competition), the gearbox not engaging the gears so smoothly, reacting more immediately when operating the paddles and downshifting faster, especially to second,
which seems like it never wants to engage (although to tell the truth, the engine is so good that it gets you out of any corner in third) and being able to put the car on the brakes before reaching the corner, in addition to them being able to withstand fatigue better and having a harder feel and shorter pedal travel.
Despite all this, it is never frustrating under any circumstances and it is addictive how quickly it reacts and how effectively it pulls every last horse, thanks to its short wheelbase of 2.47 meters (5 mm shorter than a Porsche 718 Cayman).
It requires getting used to and being very quick with your hands if you want to slide it. It goes from slightly understeering to pulling the rear axle out in a very short time and, when the electronic self-locking differential acts, it grips again immediately (quite abruptly, it seemed less predictable to us than in a current M3), so you have to counter-steer and undo it in a fairly short period.
Ultimately, for real-world use, whether for long cruises, short city trips, or just plain spirited driving, everything is always under control and it’s very enjoyable, going well enough for sporty driving without compromising on everyday ride comfort. It’s also very enjoyable to be able to feel the engine pushing hard throughout the entire rev range at all times, with a discreet but at the same time very fine sound (warning for those of you who are more of a badass: it doesn’t backfire!).
Consumption and Emissions
Toyota has approved a combined average consumption (according to the WLTP cycle) of 7.3 and 8.1 l/100km for the 2.0 and 3.0 engines, respectively. These are very tight figures, since, compared to its rivals, the 3.0 L consumes 0.3 l/100km less than its homologous version of the BMW Z4, the M40i Steptronic (8.4), and 0.8 l/100km less than a Porsche 718 Cayman PDK (8.9), and despite the latter having 4 cylinders and 40 hp less.
The average consumption of the 2.0 engine is also good, it is identical to that of the Z4 has the same engine, and is 0.3 l/100km more efficient than a 245 hp Audi TT Coupé 45 TFSI Quattro Stronic (7.6).
During our test, we were able to see how highly efficient it is in all circumstances, with consumption that can easily fall below 9 liters on average on the road. However what is impressive is that, in varied circumstances and very similar to the real use that this car would have, performing from eco-friendly to very sporty driving, both on long trips and in urban journeys, the average consumption figure for the entire test did not exceed 12 liters.
The emissions approved for the 2.0 and 3.0-litre engines are 167 and 185 gr/km, so in both versions, the corresponding tax bracket for registration will be 9.75%.
Benefits
Using the Standstill Control system, the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 has a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 5.2 seconds, and with the 3.0 engine, 4.4 seconds. Both have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. If you choose the more powerful one, you’ll hardly miss more power on the open road. It goes so fast and so well that there are always two or three good gears to choose from when exiting each corner.
It is one of the fastest sports cars in its segment. If we compare each one with the same rivals from the previous section, the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 copies the performance of the Audi TT but is two-tenths faster in the 0 to 100 km/h than the BMW Z4 sDrive30i Steptronic with the same 258 hp.
For its part, the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 is a tenth faster than the Z4 of its same power and also accelerates half a second less than the Porsche. The 350 HP 718 Cayman S and the automatic Ford Mustang Mach 1 would equal its acceleration figure (4.4 s), although the Porsche costs about 12,000 euros more.
